This framed Stevengraph shows the 'Death of Nelson' after the painting by Daniel Maclise (1806 - 1870) [collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool], but itself a version of his larger fresco in the House of Lords. This composition also well known from engraving.
Stevengraphs named after their developer Thomas Stevens mainly comprised of jacquard-woven bookmarks, postcards, historical scenes and portraits throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This example in its original card mount with the inscriptions 'Woven in Pure Silk', 'Death of Nelson'. Finely detailed in coloured silk thread, colours remain exceptionally vivid in blues, reds, yellows (gold), having only been occasionally displayed.
Similar fine example in the Royal Museums Greenwich, dated 1883 - 1898.
