This Stevengraph shows the sombre aftermath of the battle of Waterloo, with the tired commanders surrounded by the wounded as Wellington and Bucher shake hands at A La Belle Alliance. The famous quote, the next worst thing to a battle lost is a battle won.
Stevengraphs named after their developer Thomas Stevens mainly comprised of jacquard-woven bookmarks, postcards, historical scenes and portraits produced throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This example in its original card mount with the inscriptions 'Woven in Silk', 'Wellington and Blucher meeting after the Battle of Waterloo'. Finely detailed in coloured silk thread. The colours remain exceptionally vivid in blues, reds, yellows (gold), having been only occasionally displayed.
