Hare / Rabbit Tureen. Pillivuyt circa 1900

French Game Tureen (pate encroute terrine) manufactured in France by Pillivuyt factory. Underside has the printed Pillivuyt 'Made in France' mark, with an impressed number 5. The company produced game hunting inspired terrines in sizes 1 - 5. This example being the largest at size 5.

Charles Pillivuyt's first factory was founded in 1800. Game Tureens are often described as Majolica for their trump l'oeil (three dimensional) appearance. Also described as Porcelaines a Feu (fired porcelain) due to their hard, glassy interior, as evidenced by this piece.

Beautifully modelled with realistic hare features and glass eyes, and in first class condition. Circa 1900.
