Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Small Plate. Man Cooking. Edo Period. Circa 1860.
A superb small dish beautifully depicting a Japanese man cooking in the hillside. This rendition is very rare and possibly unique. The enamel colours are particularly rich in deep purple and indigo blue, typical of early cloisonne work. The attention to detail, especially the traditional clothing, smoke rising from the pot, and backdrop of the hillside is excellent. The reverse decorated with cloisonne swirls in white / ivory enamel with central light blue en-plein enamel. Heavy quality dish for its relatively small size.
Condition: Excellent original, no enamel losses. Usual small porous firing holes, typical of early cloisonne work.
