Huge Pountney & Allies 'Bristol Views Series' pottery Meat Plate / Platter. Circa 1830. Provenance: Private Collection, Bristol, UK.
Large Meat Plate of lead-glazed earthenware of significant proportions. Transfer-printed in blue with a view of the port of Bristol on the bottom. Decorated with wide border of flowers with festoons of laurel on a blue ground. This is an extremely rare Pountney & Allies 'Bristol Views Series' Large Meat Plate decorated with blue and white transfer. Excellent view of old Bristol harbour, printed 'Bristol' mark to base on a ribbon, and impressed mark '20'.
The view on this fine and rare example depicts Bristol Harbour with the ship David, which belonged to the pottery proprietors. According to Pountney, Old Bristol Potteries (1920) "she was used for bringing to the pottery the Welsh coal, the Cornish and Dorsetshire (Poole) clay, and for taking pottery goods to Wales and South of England", See Coysh and Henrywood, Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 (1982), page 56.
Condition: Excellent condition with minimal scratches. Good strong blue colour either minimal fading / staining. One very small area of imperfection on left-hand edge as shown in photos. [I do have another one in similar condition and would make an excellent pair].
